Brand Names Mean Nothing in Fantasy Football

Rule Number 1 in fantasy football: never sit your studs. Guys with the moniker of being a "stud" have earned that distinction by performing consistently and at a high level. Many fantasy owners have won their leagues riding their studs to victory. In many leagues, names like Peyton Manning, Chris Johnson, Adrian Peterson, and Larry Fitzgerald are brand names similar to Coke, Kleenex, Sony, and Walmart. The name alone often elicits a positive image and response. This season seems to be an odd, twilight-zone type of season where fantasy brand names have taken a major hit. Here's where trying to read the tea leaves has left many an owner in a difficult position.

What do Kevin Kolb and Jay Cutler have in common? Both had to leave a game this season with concussions. Football is a physical sport and there are risks associated with the game. Both players ended up being OK and they can partially thank plastics for that. Their helmets are made from molded polycarbonate shells with foam padding inside. We've come a long way since that first Army/Navy game in 1893 when the first leather football helmet was worn!

Here's Your Sign

I had my very first Bill Engvall moment recently. If you're not familiar with Bill Engvall, he's a comedian famous for his "Here's Your Sign" routines in which someone asks a question that has an obvious answer, and in the process, he responds with a smart ass answer. The metaphorical "sign" is given to the person to warn others about his/her stupidity. So, I was closing down the swimming pool at home and took the round, blue solar cover out front to lay out and dry. The neighbor next door felt the need to insert himself and say "Is that your pool cover?" Without missing a beat, I replied, "Nope, the giant down the street lost his contact lens and I'm just bringing it back". It had come out so quickly that I never even thought about it.

First the good - a big wonderful congratulations to Sara Holliday at FFLibrarian.com on her new bundle of joy. I enjoy reading Sara's daily contributions to the fantasy football world and will miss them while she's taking some much-needed time to get to know her new little guy. Sara gave me my break and is a respected member of the fantasy football industry. I hope she enjoys this time. The journey has just begun! Congrats Sara!
