Colin Kaepernick Fantasy Analysis

  • Kaepernick wants out of San Francisco
QB Colin Kaepernick wants out of San Francisco, according to the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta.  And so ends the idea of a blissful marriage between Kaep and new HC Chip Kelly.  The 'Niners, of course, could elect to hang on to their former 2nd-round pick.  But considering he's due to count $15.9 million against the cap, that'd be a strange move to make if Kaepernick truly doesn't want to be there.  Per Mehta, Kaepernick would like to play for the Jets, who are "aware" and "intrigued" by the possibility.  Stay tuned. • Kaep at center of coach choice?
Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reports that the 49ers chose Chip Kelly as their next HC over Mike Shanahan because the latter wanted to move on from QB Colin Kaepernick. The team reportedly believed that Shanahan wanted to drafted a new QB in the 1st round. If that's true, it tells us a couple of interesting things: First, Kelly apparently agrees with team management that Kaepernick is worth trying to salvage. Second, that Shanahan doesn't. He has been running NFL offenses -- as OC or HC -- since 1985. That doesn't mean Shanahan's always right (just ask Robert Griffin's knee), but it does make his opinion well worth considering -- especially if that opinion apparently kept him from re-entering the league. We'll be quite interested to see what the Niners' offseason looks like. Kelly has squeezed QB1 numbers out of Michael Vick, Nick Foles and Mark Sanchez in his short time in the league. So there's room for Kaepernick to turn back into a fantasy factor -- even if he never becomes an NFL franchise QB. Full Story

  • Kelly a fan of Kaepernick
"Chip Kelly likes running QBs.  Colin Kaepernick is a good runner."  That's the obvious connection to make now that Kelly is the 49ers' new HC.  Kelly also places a big emphasis on throwing accuracy, though, something Kaepernick has struggled with.  But the Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows writes that Kelly is "thought to be fond of" Kaepernick.  NFL Network's Ian Rapoport adds that Kelly was trying to figure out how to acquire Kaepernick at his next NFL stop.  Kelly will still need to convince 49ers management to pay Kaep the $12.4 million he's owed in 2015, but his odds of being back in San Francisco look much better now than they did yesterday. • 49ers hire Kelly as HC
The 49ers have hired Chip Kelly as their new HC.  Kelly got off to a strong start in Philadelphia, winning 10 games in each of his first 2 seasons and leading the offense to 2nd- and 5th-place finishes in total yards.  The Eagles won just 6 games this past year, though, and ranked 12th in total offense.  Kelly isn't inheriting nearly as much offensive talent in San Francisco as he did in Philadelphia.  His 1st order of business will be deciding what to do with QB Colin Kaepernick, who has the mobility Kelly likes but not the accuracy.  Kelly's run-heavy offense is good news for RB Carlos Hyde.
