Niles Paul Fantasy Analysis

  • Paul done for the season
Redskins TE Niles Paul will miss the entire 2015 season after suffering a fractured and dislocated ankle in Thursday night's preseason opener.  It's a horribly timed injury for Paul, who was coming off a personal-best 39-507-1 line last year and primed for a bigger role in 2015.  Paul's injury gives Jordan Reed another shot to establish himself as Washington's lead TE.  He hasn't been able to stay healthy through 2 NFL seasons and is currently sidelined with a bum hamstring.  When on the field, though, Reed is capable of TE1 production.  He's worth a late-round shot in fantasy drafts. • Paul carted off
Redskins TE Niles Paul was carted off the field in Thursday night's preseason opener with a leg injury.  The leg was air-casted right on the field.  We'll pass along an update when we get one, but this obviously has the look of a severe injury.  It's a tough break for Paul, who had a good offseason and was sitting atop Washington's depth chart.  The injury will give TE Jordan Reed a chance to re-establish himself as the starter.Update: Paul suffered at least a dislocated ankle.  He'll undergo an MRI to check the extent of the ligament damage. • Reed "day-to-day" with hamstring issue
Redskins TE Jordan Reed is "day-to-day" with a hamstring issue, per HC Jon Gruden.  That's becoming a perpetual state for Reed, who missed 5 games with 2 separate hamstring injuries last year.  He also underwent knee surgery this offseason, missed time in 2013 with quad, knee and foot problems, and has sustained at least 3 concussions.  Reed's durability issues are likely the main reason he's listed 2nd behind Niles Paul on Washington's current depth chart.  He'll need to get and stay healthy if he wants to move back atop the totem pole.  Reed has plenty of weekly upside when he's on the field, but the injuries make him just a late-round flier in fantasy drafts right now. • Paul listed as starter
Niles Paul is listed as the starting TE on the Redskins' initial depth chart.  "That's how it's been playing out in practices too," insider John Keim adds.  This might be at least partly because TE Jordan Reed missed most of the offseason after undergoing knee surgery.  But Paul showed well last year, averaging 13.0 yards on his 39 grabs, and then signed a new 3-year deal with the Redskins in March.  This will be a situation to keep a close eye on this preseason.  Paul and Reed both have the ability to be major fantasy factors in the lead role.
