Chris Polk Fantasy Analysis

  • Blue the Texans' starter ... for now
Alfred Blue is the Texans' starting RB "as things stand right now," according to ESPN's Tania Ganguli.  Blue worked with the 1st-team offense as Houston returned to the practice field on Wednesday for the 1st time since losing RB Arian Foster to a groin injury.  It's worth noting, though, that RB Chris Polk is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury.  "He'll definitely be in the mix to help there once healthy," Ganguli says.  The Texans also have RBs Jonathan Grimes and Kenny Hilliard on the roster.  We're keeping an eye on this situation to see if 1 guy emerges as the clear lead back while Foster is out.  But we're not very interested in Blue's upside.  A 6th-round rookie last year, he averaged 3.9 yards per carry in the 4 games Foster missed all or most of.  Blue will need big volume to be a reliable fantasy play in 2015. • Texans will sign Thomas
The Texans are set to sign RB Pierre Thomas after working him out on Wednesday morning, according to insider Aaron Wilson.  PT is 30 years old and missed 5 games last season with shoulder and rib injuries.  But he played in all but 1 game over the previous 3 years and has remained productive.  He's averaged 4.5+ yards per carry in 3 of the past 4 seasons, including a 4.9-yard mark in 2014.  Thomas has also averaged 52.8 catches and 418 receiving yards (7.9 yards per catch) over the last 4 campaigns.  He graded out at Pro Football Focus' 9th-best RB last year.  With just 1,145 career touches, Thomas still has gas left in the tank.  He immediately becomes Houston's top RB for as long as Arian Foster is out.  We're still expecting some sort of committee backfield, but look for Thomas to lead the way with 12-15 touches per game.  That could make him a RB3 or flex, especially in PPR leagues. • Foster needs groin surgery
Texans RB Arian Foster will require surgery on the groin he injured on Monday, according to insider John McClain.  Foster "should be able to return during the season," McClain adds, but exactly when is unclear.  We've heard whispers that he might land on IR-designated-for-return, which would cost him at least the first 8 weeks of the season.  We'll continue to update Foster's status as we learn more.  For now, fantasy drafters should treat him as a later-round bench stash.  Foster ranked 4th in PPR points per game last year and should still be an asset whenever he gets back on the field this year.  Meanwhile, the battle to replace Foster is now 1 of the bigger story lines in fantasy football.  RB Alfred Blue served as Foster's backup last year but averaged just 3.1 yards per carry.  The Texans signed free-agent RB Chris Polk this offseason and drafted RB Kenny Hilliard in the 7th round.  RB Jonathan Grimes also returns. • Foster injures groin
Texans RB Arian Foster suffered a groin injury in the team's Monday night practice, according to multiple reports. Jayson Braddock of ESPN 97.5 in Houston reports that the Texans worry that Foster might need surgery and could land on IR with designation to return. ESPN's Tania Ganguli confirmed that concern for the team. We'll see whether Houston announces specifics on the injury within the next day or 2. The situation obviously pushes the backup role into focus even earlier than we expected. Chris Polk and Alfred Blue look like the main competition, and we're favoring Polk there. Kenny Hilliard and Jonathan Grimes are also in the mix, and the Texans could tap into a free-agent market with some intriguing options (Ahmad Bradshaw?) available. We -- and fantasy owners everywhere -- will keep a close eye on the situation and update as more information comes out. If you're drafting now, then you'll have to push Foster at least 2-3 rounds down your draft board. Full Story
