Andre Ellington Fantasy Analysis

  • Arians hints at competition
When asked whether RB Chris Johnson could see time as the Cardinals' feature back, HC Bruce Arians told the Arizona Republic: "If he wins it. I'm open to anything once you win it." That's how it should be in an Arizona backfield currently led by Andre Ellington, who has yet to spend a healthy season as an NFL starter. We're certainly not betting on Johnson beating out Ellington for the lead role, and we are betting on Ellington to hold a big lead in touches over the rest of his backfield mates. But the Cards seem ready to at least allow competition for RB roles. We'll see what the next couple of preseason games might reveal. Full Story

  • Johnson a full-go at practice Tuesday
Cardinals RB David Johnson (hamstring) returned to a full practice on Tuesday.  He missed a big chunk of training camp and the 1st preseason game.  The addition of RB Chris Johnson probably provided some extra motivation to get back on the field.  Johnson has some catching up to do but still has the ability to carve out a role this season.  We'll be keeping a close eye on the Arizona backfield over the next few weeks. • Ellington looks healthy in preseason opener
Cardinals RB Andre Ellington missed time earlier this month with a hamstring injury.  But he looked completely healthy in Saturday night's preseason opener.  Playing 1 series with the starting offense, Ellington turned a short catch into a 57-yard gain and plunged in a 2-yard TD.  He totaled 5 touches on the drive.  Ellington remains 1 of the biggest injury risks in fantasy football, but he'll boast big weekly upside whenever he's on the field this year. • Hughes will be Cardinals' short-yardage back
Robert Hughes is locked in as the Cardinals' short-yardage back, "barring an injury," according to insider Mike Jurecki.  That's obviously not great news for RB Andre Ellington, but we didn't expect the 5'9, 199-pounder to get much short-yardage work anyway.  It's a bigger deal for RB David Johnson.  Part of his fantasy upside this year was that short-yardage (i.e. goal-line) role.  The rookie goes 6'1, 224 pounds.  But he wasn't a dominant inside runner in college and is off to a slow start in camp.  It's looking like Johnson will need an Ellington injury to make a fantasy impact this year.  Of course, Ellington is 1 of the biggest injury risks in the league.  Hughes still isn't worth a spot on your fantasy roster. • Ellington returns to practice
Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (hamstring) returned to practice Monday for the 1st time since Aug. 3. It's early, so this injury might not prove to be a big deal. But it's just the latest ding for a guy with injury history running back through college and who never played a healthy down in 2014. Ellington brings plenty of talent but also obvious risk. • Arians: Tyrann Mathieu my 'happiest draft choice'
Bruce Arians and the Cardinals have made their share of positive picks in the later rounds of the NFL Draft, but none have made Arizona's coach happier than Tyrann Mathieu. Full Story
