Le'Veon Bell Fantasy Analysis

  • Bell's suspension reduced to 2 games
The NFL has reduced Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell's suspension to 2 games.  That's a significant reduction from the original 3-game ban -- 33% to be exact.  Bell will now miss games against the Patriots and 49ers before returning for Week 3 against the Rams.  We just tacked on another game's worth of numbers to Bell's 2015 projections.  Draft Sharks Insiders can click here to check out where he sits in the rankings.  RB DeAngelo Williams' handcuff appeal takes a sizeable hit with this news.  He's now guaranteed just 2 starts against defenses that ranked 9th and 7th, respectively, against the run last year.  Of course, San Francisco figures to take a significant step back with all its offseason losses.  We still like Williams as a fantasy starter for those 2 weeks. • Bell's suspension could be reduced
ESPN's Dan Graziano hears that the NFL and Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell are negotiating a settlement that could reduce his current 3-game suspension to 1 or 2 games.  That'd obviously be huge news for Bell's fantasy value.  A 3-game ban represents 23% of a standard 13-week fantasy regular season.  Two games is just 15%; 1 game is only 7.7%.  Any reduction would make it easier to pull the trigger on Bell with an early-1st-round pick in fantasy drafts this summer.  Stay tuned for updates. • Bell looks good on 1st day of camp
Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell has said all offseason that the knee he injured late last season isn't back to 100%.  But he looked just fine to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on the 1st day of training camp on Monday.  Bell was "noticeably explosive," per Fowler, and says he could play today if he needed to.  The injured knee still requires some extra pre-practice stretching, but the Steelers clearly aren't concerned if they're letting him practice.  We'll continue to keep a close eye on Bell.  For now, though, we're not considering the knee a knock on his 2015 fantasy outlook. • Bell still not back to 100%
Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell admitted over the weekend that his knee still isn't back to 100%.  "It's close," Bell said.  "Close" would be fine if it was still February or March.  But Bell is now about 7 months removed from the injury, so it's concerning to hear that he's still not fully healed.  The injury was reported as a mere hyperextension, but that's tough to believe at this point.  We detailed Bell's elevated injury risk in a recent feature article.  It's a must-read if you're considering making Bell your 1st-round pick. • Williams down to 220 pounds
Steelers RB DeAngelo Williams is currently tipping the scales at 220 pounds.  That's reportedly down from the weight he played at last year (although he's listed at 215 on NFL.com).  Williams has focused on his nutrition this offseason as he prepares for a significant role to open the year.  He'll serve as Pittsburgh's lead back while Le'Veon Bell serves his 3-game suspension.  Despite being well past his peak, 15 or so touches per game in a top-notch offense will make Williams a starting candidate for fantasy squads while Bell is out.
