LeSean McCoy Fantasy Analysis

  • McCoy might not be "fully ready" for opener
The Bills are concerned that RB LeSean McCoy (hamstring) might not be "fully ready" for Week 1, according to ESPN's Josina Anderson.  That's not a major surprise considering the hamstring injury seemed relatively severe from the start.  "It's way too early to say whether (McCoy) will play or not," a Bills source told Anderson.  "He is doing a little bit more every day. But hell yes, I'm concerned about that. I can't say for sure he's going to be with us Week 1. I can't say that at all. It will take everything we got just to get him ready for game day, and then we get to game day (there's) no way he can be in great football shape. So I think he will be on a pitch count, I think at the very best."  We'll keep a close eye on Shady in the week leading up to next Sunday's opener against the Colts.  If he doesn't put in at least 1 full practice, though, he'll be a risky fantasy play.  The depth chart behind McCoy is murky, with Karlos Williams, Boobie Dixon and Bryce Brown in the mix. • Bills going with Taylor
The Bills are going with Tyrod Taylor as their starting QB to open the season, according to insider Jay Glazer.  HC Rex Ryan isn't expected to make an official announcement before Week 1, but we figured the decision would get leaked.  And Glazer is as reliable as they come.  Taylor has looked like Buffalo's best QB this preseason, completing 77.4% of his passes, averaging 7.6 yards per attempt and running for 108 yards and a score.  It's that rushing ability that will make Taylor an intriguing spot-start option, especially in DFS.  The Bills are expected to run the read-option with him.  That's also good news for RB LeSean McCoy.  We're decidedly less excited about Buffalo's pass-catchers. • Bills release Fred Jax
The Bills have released RB Fred Jackson.  The 34-year-old missed most of training camp with a hamstring injury but returned for this past weekend's preseason game and busted off 48 yards and a score on 5 carries.  He looked ready to serve as Buffalo's #2 RB.  But the Bills are moving on and saving over $2 million.  It leaves them with Karlos Williams, Bryce Brown and Boobie Dixon behind LeSean McCoy.  Williams was having a strong camp before being hospitalized with a still-undisclosed issue.  The latest report had the rookie expected to be ready for Week 1.  He's the best bet to emerge as McCoy's handcuff but is only worth rostering in deep fantasy leagues. • Jackson back at practice Saturday
Bills RB Fred Jackson (hamstring) returned to practice on Saturday.  He'd been sidelined since early in camp but is now on track to play in Buffalo's 3rd preseason game.  Barring another injury, Fred Jax will be the #2 RB in a run-heavy offense behind a starter who's currently sidelined with his own hamstring injury.  Jackson is worth stashing on fantasy benches. • McCoy expected to be ready for Week 1
ESPN's Adam Schefter hears that Bills RB LeSean McCoy (hamstring) is expected to be ready for Week 1.  Shady injured his hamstring on Tuesday night and underwent an MRI.  It sounds like the results were relatively good.  McCoy might miss the remainder of training camp and the preseason, which isn't ideal for a guy learning a new offense.  But when healthy, he'll remain the focal point of Buffalo's offense.  We're fine with drafting McCoy if he gets to the 2nd half of Round 2.
