Andre Ellington Fantasy Analysis

  • Johnson's role to expand
Cardinals HC Bruce Arians said Thursday that RB Chris Johnson's carries "will likely go up this week." Johnson led the backfield with 11 attempts and 44 rushing yards in the Week 2 win over the Colts -- although he wasn't targeted in the passing game. We'd still try to avoid this backfield in Week 3 fantasy lineups, but Johnson looks like the best bet if you need to dabble. Full Story

  • Arians talks backfield
Cardinals HC Bruce Arians talked on Wednesday about his plans for a David Johnson-less backfield. "Kerwynn [Williams] will start in this game [against the Colts]," Arians said. "Andre [Ellington] will spell him and play third down. And Chris [Johnson] will get some carries." Arians didn't mention RB Elijhaa Penny, but we're still looking at a 3-man committee. Williams is the top Week 2 play but should be considered no better than a RB3 or flex. Johnson could end up playing a bigger role if Williams falters. And Ellington has a shot to emerge as the top PPR play in the backfield. Full Story

  • Cardinals bring back Johnson
The Cardinals have signed RB Chris Johnson. The 31-year-old was released at final cuts after a rough preseason. He's now the most experienced back on Arizona's roster, but the fact that Kerwynn Williams was kept instead of Johnson a few weeks ago makes Williams the better fantasy bet. At least for now. With Andre Ellington and potentially Elijhaa Penny also involved, this is quickly becoming a backfield to stay away from. Full Story

  • Johnson needs surgery, expected to miss 2-3 months
Cardinals RB David Johnson will undergo surgery on his dislocated wrist this week and is expected to be sidelined 2-3 months, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Johnson will be placed on IR but has a chance to be tabbed the "designated-to-return" player. Still, we're looking at a mid-November return -- or somewhere around Week 10 or 11 -- as the best-case scenario. He'll be tough to carry on fantasy rosters unless your league has an IR spot or deep benches. With Johnson sidelined, Arizona will turn to a committee backfield of Kerwynn Williams, Andre Ellington and possibly Elijhaa Penny, D.J. Foster and/or a free-agent addition. Williams is the best fantasy bet, but we're treating him only as a RB3 or flex at this point. Ellington has a shot to be an asset in PPR leagues. Full Story

  • Cardinals add Foster
The Cardinals have plucked RB D.J. Foster from the Patriots' practice squad. He went undrafted last year and totaled just 8 touches as a rookie. The Arizona State product goes 6'0, 195 pounds and played some RB and WR over a 4-year college career that featured 444 carries and 222 catches. We'll keep an eye on Foster, but he's not yet worth owning in fantasy football. His addition is a sign, though, that the Cardinals won't lean too heavily on any 1 back in David Johnson's absence.
